(1688) Soil association
1 - A group of defined and named taxonomic soil units occurring together in an individual and characteristic pattern over a geographic region (sometimes called `natural land type`). 2 - A mapping unit used on general soil maps, in which two or more defined taxonomic units, occurring together in a characteristic pattern, are combined because the scale of the map or the purpose for which it is being made, does not require delineation of the individual soils. The legend of the Soil Map of the World comprises an estimated 5,000 different map units, which consists of soil units or associations of soil units occurring within the limits of a mappable physiographic entity.
